Tanzania: Karibu!

Karibu! Welcome… seems to be the spirit of Tanzania. As we entered the country on the ferry at the Kalimbo border post the vegetation was lush and green and the people laid back and friendly. Stopping for lunch next to the road, passers-by waved and greeted us with a friendly ‘Jambo!’ and the children weren’t scared to stand on tip toes to investigate our kitchen on wheels. Northern Mozambique – beautiful but inhospitable 

Really looking forward to enjoying the beautiful far northern part of Mozambique, we were disappointed to find it rather inhospitable, offering little in the way of tourist infrastructure.

The landscape is lush, with some virgin forest around the Quirimbas National Park, and there is a real charm in the uniformity of the square red or gray clay houses with thatched roofs. From the Zambezi to the north of Mozambique

At the outset of our trip we decided not to take Malaria prophylactics but chatting to someone who had lost 15kg in a recent three week bout in Mozambique got us re-thinking. When we learned that some of Pete’s Zimbabwean family routinely take Deltaprim, we decided to do likewise as a bad bout of malaria would completely derail the trip.
