Exploring the less travelled roads of western Kenya

Heading west from Lake Baringo the countryside was at first dry and arid reminding us of the stretch on the Orange River between Noordoewer and Aussenkehr in Namibia, but then with higher ground it became lush green as we neared Kabarnet. Thanks to the fluorspar mines the gravel road to the south was excellent and amazed us as we zig-zagged up 24 hairpin bends to the Elgeyo escarpment, at an altitude of 2,700m. Out of Africa

Travelling north-east on the 4WD road after the Kenyan border crossing, we passed through the highly populated country side with many small towns. Our route took us down the escarpment to the northern edge of the Masai Mara National Park which abuts the Serengeti to the south.  The view into the Park was spectacular: green grassy plains dotted with iconic Acacia trees as far as the eye could see! It’s no wonder ‘Africa ready’ 4×4’s are in such high demand and that the rental companies do such good business hiring them out. It takes knowledge and experience, in our case both gained through generous advice, to determine what you need, where to find it and then plenty of time to get it all done.

A few hours spent at the 4×4 outfit centres in Cape Town showed us that there appeared to be two ways of fitting out a vehicle and that the sales staff was quite happy to advise the unlimited budget option.
