We stocked up with fuel and food in Manguzi, just north of Kosi Bay, after an early wake up and a slow, bumpy ride through deep sand to the town. The border crossing went smoothly, although it took the SARS representatives (SAPS) some time to work out how we should declare our outgoing electronic equipment. Finally, after brushing aside some aggressive hustling by the local 3rd party insurance salesmen to purchase their product, we were through. Our first border crossing went surprisingly smooth! Exploring the beauty of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park
The iSimangaliso Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal was listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999 because of its ecological value, natural beauty and biodiversity.
The name iSimangaliso means ‘miracle and wonder’which aptly describes this unique place. The 332 000 hectare park contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, most of South Africa’s swamp forests and Africa’s largest estuarine system. White Clay close to Coffee Bay is a small establishment with self-catering chalets, a bar and restaurant as well as camping facilities. Whilst it had rained, with more threatening, the ground wasn’t sodden and we much preferred the airy and cool camping option to the claustrophobic confines of walls and a roof.
