Although the N1 is the fastest way to travel from the north of South Africa down to the Cape, it’s not the most scenic or relaxing. That’s why Johan Heyneke decided to turn off onto back roads and travel on gravel as much as possible on his summer trip.
On a 10-day trip from north to south, Hannes Steyn stuck to gravel roads wherever possible and saw the true countryside. Making his way through the Karoo, he also saw things he’d never imagined.
The N1 is the quickest way from Gauteng to Cape Town, but to see more of South Africa, swap tar for gravel roads and take a meandering route. Hannes Steyn shares the trip report of his 10-day journey.
