Coronavirus 2020: A time to reflect and prepare

Now is the time to resist the lure of the open road for once. With the Coronavirus confining many of us to our homes, we encourage you to stick to the protocols and travel virtually instead. Here in South Africa we have been placed on a nationwide lockdown starting at midnight of Thursday 26 March 2020. The lockdown period is set for 21 days, however, we expect authorities may extend this period if required. We also expect our neighbours in Southern Africa to follow the same path very soon. Get your vaccinations for travelling Africa!

Travelling Africa does pose certain health risks for which you can take precaution. Visit your medical practitioner or Travel Clinic to ensure that you get the correct vaccinations, at least six months before your venture into Africa. Some vaccinations require several treatments with a time gap in between each. Whilst the advice given here under is accurate at the time of publication, check with your health clinic prior to travel to ensure that requirements haven’t changed.

Yellow fever

 Yellow fever is endemic in the tropics of Africa and America but is a much bigger problem in Africa. It is a virus transmitted by a mosquito which flourishes in human habitations, especially under slum conditions and is thus prevalent in the large urban informal settlements in tropical Africa. Ebola and what it entails for travellers

Having a hand held device pointed at you by a border official (who normally aren’t the most friendly or helpful specimens) can be a scary experience.  Since the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in 2014 all travellers must have their temperature taken at border crossings and at airports in an attempt to detect possible infection and prevent the spread of the virus.
